introduction to team animal's assessment toolbox " A good education makes knowledge, skill, and ideas useful. Assessment should determine whether you can use your learning, not merely whether you learned stuff." Grant Wiggins (Edutopia, April 2006)
The idea of "assessment for learning" has been on the educational agenda of many countries around the world for almost two decades. According to M.A. Buhagiar's article (2007), the presence of traditional forms of assessment—namely, tests and examinations—in contemporary educational systems negatively affect the teaching–learning environment. Gipps (1994) stated that the qualities of a trustworthy assessment are credibility, transferability, dependability and authenticity. Teaching to “the test" might be at the expense of more meaningful learning activities. A single test score may not capture the true skills of a student; on the other hand "educative" assessment will train learners about the real challenges which they will face as adults. A variety of tools are available at our disposal to evaluate “understanding as transfer of knowledge”, especially in online learning. Team Animal would like to introduce you to a few of them and their relevance to authentic assessment.
